What to Expect on the Day of Your MCA Oral Exam

You’ve studied, revised, and practised your orals — now it’s exam day.

Here’s what to expect so you can walk into your UK MCA oral exam calm, prepared, and ready to impress.

1️⃣ The structure of your MCA oral exam

Most oral exams for Officer of the Watch (OOW) or Chief Mate last around 60–90 minutes.

They’re normally conducted one-on-one with an examiner via video call. You may have a second examiner join you, in an observation capacity.

You should log in at least ten minutes before your exam on the link you have been provided.

2️⃣ Before the exam begins

You’ll first be asked to show your ID to the examiner, before showing them around the room you’re having the exam in and your desk. You’ll then be asked to screen share to ensure that you have no notes available on screen.

Then, the examiner will explain how the session will run.

Take this moment to breathe, sit comfortably, and get used to their tone and pace.

3️⃣ During the exam

You’ll be asked a mix of:

– Scenario-based questions (“What would you do if…”).

– Procedural questions (COLREGs, emergency response, stability, etc).

– Follow-up questions to test your applied understanding.

When a question is asked:

– Take 2–3 seconds to think.

– Structure your answer clearly using: Situation → Action → Reason, where appropriate.

– Stay calm if you don’t know — talk through your reasoning or where you would find the answer instead.

To prepare for this, use the Virtual Examiner. It allows you to hear questions being asked out loud and practise speaking your answers clearly — just like you’ll do on the day.

If you don’t understand a question, it’s completely fine to ask for it to be repeated — it shows professionalism. You would ask for a repeat if you didn’t understand an instruction on board, so do the same in your orals.

💡 Tip: Examiners aren’t trying to catch you out — they want to see how you think and handle pressure safely.

4️⃣ After the exam

When it’s over, the examiner will let you know whether you’ve passed or need to resit.

If you don’t pass, don’t panic. You’ll receive feedback on what to improve — and that’s where your mock oral sessions come in handy.

Book a one-to-one mock oral to focus on your weak spots and rebuild confidence for your next attempt.

5️⃣ Key takeaways for exam day success

✅ Ensure you’re logged in ahead of time.

✅ Speak clearly and confidently — even if you’re unsure and make sure you don’t mumble your answers.

✅ Remember: safety, reasoning, and professionalism always matter more than memorisation.

✅ Practise regularly using your question bank and Virtual Examiner before the big day.
