Deck Cadets can either self sponsor, or seek a sponsoring company. I often get messages asking who can sponsor a Cadetship, or provide sea time, as Deck Cadets are required to have 12 months sea time before applying for their Notice of Eligibility (NOE).
Sponsorship for UK Deck Cadetships are usually only open to UK citizens, or EU residents who usually live in the UK.
There are three main types of sponsoring companies:
– Charitable Organisations: Your college phases will be supported through your training phases by a training officer from the charitable organisation, with sea time on a range of ship types and with different companies.
– Shipping Companies: Your college phases will be supported through your college phases by a dedicated training officer, with sea time being completed on the company’s vessels.
– Training Organisations: These companies manage cadets, that are sponsored by other shipping companies. You could do your sea time on your sponsoring company’s vessels – or a variety of different vessels and companies.
When considering a sponsoring company, a number of things should be considered:
– If there is a certain type of ship you want to be on for your Cadetship
– If you want to try a variety of ships during your Cadetship
– If you have a preference for a certain college
– If you want to have a job with that company after you are qualified, sometimes this is in the form of a bond (such as 12 months service after qualification).
Below is a list of sponsoring companies.
